Low-Maintenance Plants

Every living being has certain physiological needs that it must meet to survive. And while humans and animals can do most of them on their own, plants, especially domestic ones, are mainly dependent on their owners. Since they are not in their natural environment but pots that in some way limit them, their ability to take care of themselves is also limited. Different houseplants from monstera have different requirements in terms of care, growing conditions, and space. For this reason, choosing the perfect greenery for your living or working space is not easy. If you are a person without much free time or simply don’t have a green thumb, the best choice for you is greens i.e. Low-Maintenance Plants that will survive your negligence.

Table of Contents

  • Chinese Evergreen- Low-Maintenance Plants
  • Snake Plant- Low-Maintenance Plants
  • Devil’s Ivy- Low-Maintenance Plants
  • Money Tree
  • Spider Plant
  • Dumb Cane

Chinese Evergreen- Low-Maintenance Plants

The best low-maintenance houseplants are those that don’t require much care. A good example is the Chinese Evergreen, a foliage plant with big, heart-shaped leaves that don’t need much attention. It’s an excellent decoration and air-purifier, so you can even keep it in smoky rooms.

Chinese Evergreen is relatively easy to take care of and doesn’t require a lot of fertilizer. Still, it needs a medium amount of indirect light, and it thrives best indoors. The amount of light will actually depend on the flower color – the brighter it is, the more light Chinese Evergreen needs, and vice versa.

This plant loves warm climates and needs high humidity. Keep it away from windows and drafts. Position your Chinese Evergreen in the warmest part of your home, and don’t worry. Watering is needed every few days, but a good alternative is often just light water-spraying the leaves.

Snake Plant- Low-Maintenance Plants

Among the best low-maintenance houseplants is the Snake Plant. This succulent requires very little light and has a sharp look. This hardy yet elegant greenery is an excellent choice for homes with pets as it’s non-toxic. It’s also easy to propagate, so you can decor the entire house with it.

Snake Plant can be a great way to liven up any room or office. It can even survive in the dark so that you can place them in hallways or stairs. Water this houseplant once a month because it needs the soil dried out from time to time. As for fertilizers, you could use a small amount every month during spring and summer.

Devil’s Ivy- Low-Maintenance Plants

The Devil’s Ivy or Golden Pothos is a great low-maintenance houseplant that can grow in any light and requires little watering. But when you first bring it home, you’ll need to take care of its roots as they can quickly overgrow their pot. Once you replant your Golden Pothos into a suitable container, provide it with some fertilizer and renew the stocks every month. Check this source for transplanting tips.

Occasional fertilizing and watering will ensure this plant’s growth up to eight feet. It will look great if you let the vines slop over the hanging pot. But pay attention – Devil’s Ivy contains some toxins, so it’s not the best choice if you have kids and pets.

Money Tree

Money Tree is one of the most common houseplants. It’s believed that this plant attracts money and prosperity. You can see it in offices or stores, as its round leaves remind of coins, so Money Tree should entice more profits.

As for the maintenance, Money Tree needs occasional watering. As long as the soil is moist, no watering is needed. However, it’s poisonous to dogs and cats. If ingested, it can cause diarrhea and an upset stomach. So just keep it away from your furry buddies.

This plant is problematic at the beginning of growth because it needs more time to take root. You will help it by repotting in a spacious container, in soil specialized for succulents. Once rooted, Money Tree will grow for decades.

Spider Plant

Spider Plant

Spider Plant is an excellent choice for indoors as it’s quite durable and sturdy. It will survive even the most negligent owners, but it will need moderate sunlight to grow properly. In shady places, the leaves of this plant will be dark green. More light will brighten the leaves and help them get white lines.

Since Spider Plants have thick roots, they should have even moisture in the soil. But it won’t die because of irregular watering, as the roots store water and food for hard times. This plant tolerates significant temperature changes, so it’s a good choice for porches and loggias. Just protect it from freezing during cold days.

Dumb Cane

Dumb Cane is one of those houseplants that don’t need too much care, but it’s not for everyone. Because of the toxins in its leaves, don’t take it if you have kids and pets roaming around. So find it an isolated place and admire its beauty from afar.

If you dare that Dumb Cane adorns your interior, you will be relieved by knowing it’s a low-maintenance plant. Moderate watering, moderate light, and occasional leaves freshening are all needed. The only effort can be frequent transplanting (every two years), but you can solve that by planting Dumb Cane into a big pot at the beginning.

The best low-maintenance houseplants are not hard to care for. You can opt for a wide variety of species to thrive in any room of your home. But you still have to choose carefully as not every species will fit into your lifestyle.
